About Chocolate Tiramisu Cake
You all know how much I love tiramisu, it’s one of my all-time favorite desserts next to caramel pudding. This chocolate flavored tiramisu recipe is made specifically with Nutella.
For those who are new to tiramisu, it is a popular Italian dessert that is also called a Pick-me-up dessert. Because not a single person can resist this delicious dessert. It’s made with Italian lady finger biscuits covered in a creamy mascarpone cheese filling.
Mascarpone cheese is a super expensive cheese where I live. What’s more, it is very difficult to get it. So I always make it myself. It doesn’t take long to make and only uses 2 ingredients. I prepare the cheese 2 days in advance so everything can blend perfectly.

What is Tiramisu
Tiramisu (Italy: Tiramisu from pick me up“pick me up” or “cheer me up”) is an Italian dessert with a coffee flavor.
Made from ladyfingers (savoiardi) dipped in coffee, coated with a mixture of beaten egg, sugar and mascarpone cheese, flavored with chocolate. The recipe has been adapted into various types of cakes and other desserts.
Tiramisu, which literally means Pick Me Up, is one of the famous Italian desserts. If you taste it once, I’m sure you’ll pick it up wherever you get the chance too. That’s good. Many of us think making this at home is quite complicated, but it’s not.

If you can’t find savoiardi biscuits locally, it’s easy to make your own. A few years ago I even shared an Italian Ladyfinger Biscuit Recipe on the blog. But it’s easy to get on Amazon or any store.
Over the years of making so many Tiramisu cakes, here are my tips and tricks. Make sure to brew your black coffee strong. You can even use two to three shots of espresso and then dilute with water. The stronger the coffee, the more flavor it imparts to the final product.
When whipping the cream, make sure to beat it thick so it holds the cake better. Once the cake is cooked, give it enough time to put it in the refrigerator. I recommend making it a day in advance so it sits in the fridge until it’s full so it gives the best results.

Ingredients
- Lady’s finger biscuits (savoiardi) – it is traditionally used in tiramisu cake. But you can also use sponge cake. I’ve also seen recipes using biscuits.
- mascarpone cheese – The best cheese to use in tiramisu, because it has a unique texture and taste to the cake.
- Sugar – powdered sugar until finely mixed evenly with the cream mixture making it super light and creamy. You can also use icing sugar.
- vanilla – gives flavor to the cream and adds aroma.
- cream – use cold whipping cream to lighten the mixture and give volume to the cream.
- Coffee – Use strong brewed coffee to dip lady finger biscuits.
- nuts – You can use melted chocolate or Nutella to mix with cream and toppings.

Step by Step Images
1) Start by making the cream filling for the tiramisu. I used my homemade mascarpone cheese for this recipe. Take mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl.

2)Use an electric beater to beat until smooth and thick.

3) Pour in heavy whipping cream. Make sure the cream is cold.

4)Add nutella. You can also use melted and cooled semi-sweet or dark chocolate.

5)Now beat again for 2 to 3 minutes until thick.

5) grab your ladyfinger biscuits.

6) Also take cold brewed coffee in another bowl. Dip the biscuits in the coffee. Don’t soak them for too long or the biscuits will become soggy and fall apart.

7) Arrange in a baking dish that has been lined with a base. Because I wanted to lift the tiramisu as a whole, I covered it with foil. You don’t need to line the pan if you don’t want to lift the whole cake.
Arrange the biscuits in a tight layer.

8) Spread whipped cream over the dipped biscuits.

9)Now sprinkle some nutella. This enhances the flavor and makes it super chocolatey.

10) Repeat the coating process. Place the dipped lady finger biscuits on top of the nutella.

11) Spread with cream, then nutella. I repeated it one more time. The top layer should be cream.

12)Now sprinkle nutella all over the cream layer. Place the cake in the refrigerator overnight.

13) Before serving, sprinkle with enough cocoa powder. Slice and serve.

Expert Tips
- Use electric beaters to beat the cream mixture. it makes it light and airy.
- Make sure the coffee you use is strong and cold. Also dip the biscuits a little at a time so they don’t crumble.
- Be generous with the cream and nutella which adds so much flavour.
- You can make as many layers as you like, preferably a minimum of 3 layers of biscuit.
- Make sure to store the cake in the refrigerator for a full day for best results.
General Questions
Don’t beat the cream and mascarpone cheese too often because it will separate and cause lumps.
You don’t need to use whipped cream in this recipe and can just use the mascarpone cheese mixture. However, whipping cream makes the cream layer lighter and tastier.
You can make the coffee as strong as you like, you can even add a little coffee liquor or any rum to the coffee liquor
